Realtors Couldn’t Believe What This 96-Year-Old Woman Was Hiding Inside Her House

Published on 03/18/2020

Real-estate agents, the sisters Carlo and Gladys Spizzirri had been waiting to look at a specific house for a very long time. After patiently waiting, the house on 148 Jane Street was about to go on the market at last. People who were interested in the property finally had the chance to see what was hiding inside all this time. All we can say right now is that what was waiting inside was very surprising, to say the least.

You'll Never Guess What This 96-Year-Old Woman Was Hiding Inside Her House

A Regular Home

You’d think that 148 Jane Street would be just like any other house in Toronto, Ontario when looking at it from the outside. The street was relatively plain and simple. It had no notable landmarks. The area didn’t have anything distinct about it either. Normal-looking homes surrounded the house, so it was easy to assume that the interior would reflect the same.

A Totally Ordinary Home

Looking To Sell

Just a couple of people have gone inside this particular house. The only thing anyone knew about it otherwise was that the same people lived there for as long as they could remember. However, everything they knew about it wasn’t the whole truth. This story really started when the realtors got a call in regard to a house that the owner planned on selling. Needless to say, Carla and Gladys needed to see it for themselves first.

Exceeded Expectations

Looking To Sell

Just A Regular Day

It began as a rather unexciting day at the office. The pair of sisters worked together. Everyone there was busy doing what they normally did, so no one expected that day to be the game-changer it turned out to be. They simply went about their day answering the phone, showing houses, and trying to get new clients. The agency was owned by the two sisters, but they didn’t always work together. It all changed when they found out what a good team they made. One of them would look for new listings to sell while the other would talk to potential customers. They were efficient and effective.

Surprising Event

After getting years of experience, Carla and Gladys knew just how the business worked. They were fantastic at their jobs and enjoyed what they did. They didn’t get many surprised in the real estate industry. However, there were still times when they’d be taken by surprise. This would be one of those times.

The Phone Rings

It seems like even the most professional realtors aren’t immune to shock. They had no idea at the time, but here is what was going to happen: they were onto something big, only they didn’t know that yet. No one can really know what fate has in store, after all. There was silence in the office when it happened. The phone started ringing. It was a call that changed their lives forever.

The Phone Rings

A Call From A Stranger

As you’d expect, the phone rings plenty in a real estate office, so they answered just like they would any other day. However, what made them realize this phone call wasn’t the same as usual was the person on the other end of the line. It was Joyce, an older woman who was looking for someone to sell her house. She was still not sure about it.

A Call From A Stranger

A Secret

Joyce sounded hesitant as she explained her plans to sell her house. The sisters were able to tell from her tone and the way she spoke that she wasn’t too keen on the idea. However, they also saw she was very persistent. Despite everything, she would most likely end up selling the house. She told the sisters a secret they never expected to hear. It completely shifted the entire situation.

A Different Kind Of Emotion

Many people who sell their house think that it’s a step in the right direction. For this reason, people seem happy when they call real estate offices. To them, it’s a mark of a brand-new beginning. However, Joyce didn’t seem to be excited about the idea of selling her house.

Hiding Something

A Different Kind Of Emotion

Hiding Something

It’s common for realtors to have somewhat of a sixth sense when talking to their clients. Both of the sisters were able to tell that the person speaking to them was keeping a secret. Maybe it was something that would make selling the place harder. They already had previous experiences with unpleasant things during their careers. They were well aware that it could damage the process of selling a house.

Challenge Accepted

Joyce wasn’t trying to hide any of the typical homeowner problems. She didn’t lie about serious things like black mold or a water heater that doesn’t work. This secret was bigger than that. We hope you’re ready to find out the truth about her home. Carla and Gladys stuck to their guns and decided to take on the challenge.

Something New

After spending a good few years in the business, they thought they had seen everything there was to see. They already handled many things that would make ordinary people throw in the towel. However, they were more than capable of dealing with anything. At least, that’s what they thought before they were to this house. They had been trying to come up with ideas of what they would find in Joyce’s house. While their ideas were pretty crazy, it wasn’t something they imagined at all. Before we get to that, let’s talk about what happened when they got to the property first.

Low Expectations

The sisters had three years of experience in the real estate industry already, so they knew Toronto extremely well. They were known for buying and selling properties in the most popular neighborhoods in the city. Aside from being experts, they had the background to back it up as well. Every once in a while, they would snag a property that needed minimal work and it would practically sell itself without their help. Do you think that was the case this time? They were about to find out. However, they weren’t keeping their hopes up. Joyce didn’t sound too excited about selling the property, but the only way to find out why was to go and see it in person.

Moving On

When Joyce first called the real estate agents, she told them something very surprising. It was going to affect the property as well as the sale itself. She hinted that they were about to find something surprising the minute they’d walk through the front door. What on earth was she talking about?

A Living Legend

Joyce was an older woman. In fact, she was 96 years old at the time. While they were surprised by her age, Joyce was very much lucid and still had good hearing. Carls thought this was incredibly impressive since she had to speak louder while talking to her own grandmother. It was mind-blowing that someone at Joyce’s age was in such great shape. Still, this didn’t hold a candle to the actual surprise they had in store. Are you ready to hear about it?

Their Expectations

When the real estate agents walked into the house, they had no idea something unbelievable was waiting for them inside. From the outside, it didn’t look different from all the other houses in the area. However, they were able to see what she was talking about as soon as they went through the doors.

A Looming Disaster

Joyce told the sisters that she’d been living in the house for over 70 years. In those 70 years, she had never touched the house – with the only exception being the kitchen. It was remodeled once. After hearing this, the sisters began dreading the home inspection they had to do. There was a good chance it was going to be in bad shape if it was neglected.

Worst-Case Scenario

When Carla and Gladys made their way to 148 Jane Street, they were feeling somewhat skeptical about the entire thing. After all, they were under the impression that Joyce couldn’t have maintained the house and kept it in good condition with no help. They decided it was better to prepare for the worst-case scenario.

A Hoarder

The closer they were to go to the house, the more the sisters were worried. They were worried about the effort and time it would take to clean the house if their worst fears would come true. One of those was walking in and finding out it was a hoarder’s house. It was very possible that Joyce had a house filled with junk she’d collected over 70 years.

Not All Bad

On the other hand, they were sure that they lucked out on the location of the house. No matter what they found inside, this should make up for it. The area was a place that housing prices have been going up for a while already, so the realtors knew they could sell it at a great price. After all, the location of a house is one of the most important aspects of it. When they ended the phone call with Joyce, they began checking the numbers to see how much they would be able to make on the property. The number they came up with was higher than they initially thought, making them pleased to see it would make a large profit for the company. Finally, the only thing to do by that point was to find the time to go and inspect the house and see what needed to be done before putting it on the market.

So Far So Good

Located in the Old Mill neighborhood of the city, Joyce’s house was in the spot that was considered to be the ideal location for many people in Toronto. The other houses that were sold in the neighborhood went for impressive prices. However, they had no clue at the time just how much money they would make from this one. After their calculations were done, the two sisters estimated that the property was worth an incredible $968,000.

However, they couldn’t be sure about the price before seeing the property in person and inspecting the inside. They had to factor in the cost it would take to fix it up and get it to an acceptable living standard. There was still one problem left. Joyce sounded very hesitant when they spoke to her. Could they change her mind and get to sell it?

Making Up Her Mind

When she contacted them for the first time, Joyce didn’t sound too sure about the idea of selling her house. Understandably, this was a concern for Carla and Gladys. The older woman told them that even though she’d lived there for 72 years, she was really planning on selling it. We bet it was really difficult to leave a place after living the majority of your life in it. This place must have been full of memories for Joyce.

The way she spoke made the real estate agents pause. Was she upset about giving up her home of seven decades? Maybe it was that she wasn’t telling them something? Naturally, it only made sense to feel that way when you leave a place you’re so attached to. If it turned out to be the other one, the agency would have plenty to deal with.

Maintenance Issues

Before they would make a decision, the two decided to drop by 148 Jane Street and go through with the inspection. They knew the house would most likely need repairs before they could put it on the market. Everything depended on the way the house was maintained all these years.

The real estate agents scheduled a time and date to go check out the property for themselves. This would allow them to figure out what they need to fix up. Final Answer

Before they had the chance to come over and visit, Gladys and Carla could only base their price estimate on the address of the house and a picture of its exterior. These weren’t reliable factors on their own, of course. There was also the fact that it looked very similar to a lot of other properties on the same street.

A Decision At Last

At last, Joyce came to a decision. She was going to sell the house, so the only thing the realtors had to do was see the place in person. Finally, it would be the day to conduct their inspection. They came to the address and Joyce greeted them at the front door. The two sisters were absolutely stunned when they saw what was waiting for them inside.

Amazing Interiors

They didn’t know what they were about to see and there was no way they could have prepared for it. After walking through the front dooe, they could only stare in amazement at the interior of the house. It wasn’t mundane in the slightest. Joyce was clearly not a hoarder, either.

In fact, tJoyce was a traditional woman who cared for her home as much as she could. The house was absolutely stunning inside. The realtors were also surprised to see the amount of care that went into the house maintenance. It was just about perfect, from the furniture to the decor and even the knicknacks everywhere. It was spotless. However, that was not all.

Time Capsule

Carla and Gladys were amazed to see the condition the house was in. They felt almost as if they had won the lottery. They didn’t expect this at all, even though they knew they could now sell it at a higher price than they even thought of. This was due to the great condition the house was in.

The Designer Herself

There was even more to this story. The house was essentially a huge time capsule. Walking through the front door almost felt like walking straight back into the ’40s. That was the time Joyce moved into the house and began decorating it. She chose everything, from the wallpaper to the curtains, flooring, and furniture.

Something Special

As the ladies took a tour of the house, they were ecstatic to see that each room was cleaner than the last. It was the best-maintained and cleanest house they have ever seen throughout their career. It was more than just an ordinary house – it was a homage to the past. Joyce went through plenty of effort to care for it. They could clearly see why she had hesitated to sell it. Despite the fact that the house was in great condition, there was something else they thought could be a problem. It was something that would make or break the deal. They just hoped it wouldn’t be a big issue.

Something Special

Huge Problem

They were somewhat worried since the house was decorated in a very feminine way. Despite the fact that it was all well kept, it wasn’t going to appeal to male buyers because of the decor. The color scheme would be an issue if a buyer wouldn’t be interested in putting in the effort to redo the decor. It would take a lot of time, money, and effort to redo the entire house. In addition, they knew that money could be in the fee they wanted to charge instead. The rooms with pink, gold, and purple color schemes probably wouldn’t attract male buyers and even some female buyers as well.

Very Unique

The most unique room in the house was an aqcuired taste. In the basement there was a room that had wood paneling and a wet bar, making it the perfect man cave. Since it already looked like this, it would only need minor tweaks to make it ideal. Clearly, the person who spent a lot of time in that room was a man. This must have been a private space for Joyce’s husband. It most likely served as a space for him to relax on his own or with friends.

Apart From That

There was no denying that the house was absolutely gorgeous, but the same couldn’t be said about the backyard. Obviously, this was one part of the property that was neglected. They installed AstroTurf down there at some point or another, but that was about it. Despite that, Carla and Gladys knew an opportunity when they saw one. They knew they could sell this place for a great price. What they needed to do next was have inspectors come and check the house for hidden flaws and any damage that would need fixing before being sold.

The Inspectors

Even though the house looked great, it could still be hiding some serious problems behind the scenes. There might have been something wrong with the foundation, or there was mold inside the walls. These sort of things are those that mean a massive price drop. Although, Carla and Gladys were very confident that the house was just fine. All the same, it was always a possibility that something unexpected would turn up. Maybe some issue was there that hasn’t been taken care of? When it was time for the inspectors to look at the house, everyone was in for a surprise.

Beneath It All

When the inspectors got to the house, they got to work immediately. They looked and checked every single nook and cranny of the house. They checked everywhere, looking for surprises that could be hidden by old walls or flooring. There was plenty of space to look through, so it took a while for them to finish. What they found would shock everyone. The house was in perfect shape! It was probably in better condition that when Joyce bought it back in the 1940s. With her husband, she took very good care of the house. There was nothing to be done before it could be sold. In fact, Gladys and Carla just needed to go to the office and that’s it. This has never happened to them before!

When the sisters got back to their office, they put the house up for sale for the price of $699,000. While it was very expensive, something exciting happened. A bidding war began when people saw how beautiful the house was! Potential buyers must have seen how amazing the interior was and they all wanted it. The bidding continued. For people who were looking to buy a house in that neighborhood, it would be a great choice, In fact, even people who weren’t on the market began bidding. They might not have needed a house, but this incredible home must have made them rethink their decision.

Blast To The Past

As you’ve probably expected, this amazing house went viral online. It even was featured on the news! Who would have thought that a 96-year-old woman could maintain such a house on her own? Naturally, the popularity made the price go way up. For people who paid attention to the whole story, the house must have felt more like a museum to them than a house to live in. It looked like something from the ’40s inside. Joyce chose not to change anything so she could still afford to maintain it.

While the place stayed mostly the same, Joyce did say that there was one part of the house that was renovated. In the ’60s, she decided to modernize the kitchen to fill it with the modern conveniences back then. Even though this update happened in the ’60s, all the appliances in the house were still in working order. Considering how well-kept the house was, it’s not all that surprising to hear that this was the case.

Where She Went

As you’ve probably guessed from the amount of care that went into the home, Joyce saw herself as an interior designer. She said so to the Daily Mail during an interview. If you ask us, she should have made a career out of it! She’s so talented! However, now, it was time to say goodbye to her own masterpiece that took decades to put together. What would be next for her? The media heard about her selling the house to get the money she needed for a retirement home. She wanted to enjoy her twilight years without having to maintain a house. She used to be a seamstress in the past. Can you believe she managed to put together the house with no training at all? When speaking to HGTV, she said: “I’ve always tried to be individual, and follow my own styles.”

A History Lesson

Joyce and her husband began calling 148 Jane Street home back in 1942. Back then, the Second World War was still happening. Everyone was focused on the destruction going on. The couple relocated to this two-story brick house and decided to make it theirs. Many people wanted to know if the new owners planned on leaving the interior or if they would redo it. If you ask us, it would be such a shame to destory everything Joyce worked so hard to make. To this day, we have no idea what the new owners did to the house. The only thing we can assume is that it’s been sold since the listing is no longer on the site. Seeing as it isn’t an inheritance or museum, the new owners are free to do what they want with the house.

Not The Furniture

However, there was one catch about buying the property. Whoever won the auction wouldn’t get the furniture in the house. We’re sure the furniture was a major part of the home design, so we hope they read the fine print before buying the house. Joyce’s daughter wanted all the furniture for herself and got it as part of her inheritance. We bet she has many memories with all those antiques that were there.

After Seven Decades

Joyce was only 24 years old when she moved into the house. She’s lived there for seven decades before deciding it was time for something new. She said to the press that her personal style was tone on tone pieces. She also loves soft colors and matching designs. Seeing the way things looked, she liked pastels a lot. The Intricate Details

The house has two bathrooms that have wall-to-wall carpeting and wallpapers that were straight out of the post-war era. Other gorgeous details include baroque patterns, floral sweeps, gold touches, and metallic wallpaper. You can only imagine how she managed to make all these interesting details work together. The house also has fireplaces which are important for Toronto winters. All the rooms have been carefully planned and decorated. All the cupboards and hardware were customized and tailor-made.
