People wanted SeaWorld’s orcas released

SeaWorld could only do so much in the aftermath of ‘Blackfish.’ After all, it had already traveled over the internet, and the damage had already been done as people continued to discuss the treatment of captive animals. People were particularly anxious about keeping orcas in captivity, especially if they had been acquired from the wild. Many people began to lobby for better treatment of the animals or for their release back into the wild. When SeaWorld was forced to ban trainers for orca pools, it thought it had lost its biggest draw. If they don’t make a shift soon, releasing the whales could be all they need to finish the parks for good.

SeaWorld didn’t acknowledge Blackfish was having an effect on its parks

Following the release of ‘Blackfish,’ many people campaigned to boycott SeaWorld, and it appears that their ideas were successful. It didn’t take long for the park’s attendance to drop as consumers refused to pay the firm. According to reports, SeaWorld lost a whopping $15.9 million as a result of ‘Blackfish.’ Nonetheless, the park blamed high ticket costs and inclement weather. Attendance at SeaWorld parks was also down by up to 5% in 2013. This dropped by another 1% to 2% in 2014. Overall attendance was down 5.2% in 2014 compared to the previous year by the conclusion of the year. Although the documentary was not specifically accused, many people couldn’t help but notice the perfect timing of the release.
