The general public and SeaWorld trainers have conflicting opinions about ‘Blackfish.’ SeaWorld, on the other hand, is vehemently opposed to the documentary. The park claims that ‘Blackfish’ “exploits a tragedy” and is “misleading” and “inaccurate.” The park even claims that the film concealed “key facts about SeaWorld” that the public should be aware of. SeaWorld has been vocal in its opposition to the documentary since its release, stating that it is beneficial to the whales. The park, for example, claims to devote millions of dollars each year to “conservation and scientific research.” Unfortunately, other organizations, including the Oceanic Preservation Society and marine researcher Debbie Giles, have challenged the assertions as false.

The tragedy of Dawn Brancheau’s death was always going to tarnish SeaWorld’s reputation. After all, there were a lot of people who witnessed her final moments and will be permanently changed by it. ‘Blackfish’ only seemed to exacerbate the park’s problems. That meant SeaWorld needed to act quickly if it was to reverse the negative press. One of those times occurred when the park added the ‘Truth About Blackfish’ part to its website and filed a complaint against an OSHA officer, alleging unethical behavior. According to SeaWorld, they also organized a vote among their employees, which reportedly demonstrated that witnessing ‘Blackfish’ had not impacted any of their perceptions of the park.
