Tilikum may have taken more lives in captivity than any other orca. He is responsible for many deaths at SeaWorld, but he is not the only one participating in a heinous act. Alex Martinez is another man who died at the hands of a whale, this time near Loro Parque, Tenerife. Keto, the orca in question, was leased to the park by SeaWorld. To compound matters, Alex died just two months before Dawn Brancheau. Although the park claimed it was an accident, an autopsy revealed that Alex suffered tears to vital organs, compression fractures, and bite marks, indicating a high level of violence.

While Dawn Brancheau’s death was not the first at SeaWorld, it was the final nail in the park’s coffin. Many individuals were outraged that the incident occurred in the first place, let alone in front of so many people. That is what prompted some people to gather together in order to expose SeaWorld’s purported secrets. ‘Blackfish,’ a documentary, swept the world by storm. The film focused on Tilikum and how the orca came to be captured in the first place. It also suggested that many of the tragedies may have been averted. Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the director, was supposedly inspired to make ‘Blackfish’ after SeaWorld said Dawn died after being dragged by her ponytail.
