Tilikum ended someone else’s life before Dawn Brancheau and after Keltie Bryne
Dawn Brancheau could have been the third victim to die at the hands of Tilikum by the time she died. There appears to have been another victim in all of this, as Daniel Patrick Dukes was discovered dead, although things were a little different. Daniel, it turned out, did not work at SeaWorld and simply hung out. He apparently waited until the park closed before diving into the pool to swim with the orcas. Daniel wasn’t discovered until the next day, by which time it was too late. According to the coroner’s findings, Daniel’s body was mutilated, with Tilikum perhaps chewing out and consuming his private parts, which were never found.
Stories about Daniel Dukes’ lifestyle took away from the seriousness of the attack
Daniel Dukes’ death may have dealt a severe blow to SeaWorld. That is, until the park appears to have discovered a means to divert attention away from Tilikum and toward Daniel’s personal life. For one thing, the park made it clear that he didn’t work for SeaWorld and instead snuck into the orca pools on his own. This, according to SeaWorld, did not imply that orcas posed a threat to humans. The park also claimed that personnel saw Daniel spying on young girls the day he died, as well as how he talked to himself and lacked personal cleanliness. To make matters worse, reports of Daniel’s existence as a minor thief diverted attention away from Tilikum’s attack.
