In the dark, the quiet ranch proved restless. Hot air nudged Jack and Bonnie as they followed after their children. Bonnie explained, “I knew something was wrong with those eggs.” Jack didn’t respond to her anger and continued on until they all caught up. They stared at the egg field together, surprised at the sight they had.

The eggs shook like an earthquake, and they shook considerably more than the day Jack found them. The eggs vibrated so much that they loosened the tarpaulin above them. Mary and Giselle were on their knees. As something prepared to hatch, the family waited with bated breath to see what it would become. After a few minutes of waiting, a large crack appeared in one of the eggshells. The children approached while Jack and Bonnie watched as if they were frozen to death.
