Out into the darkness
Jack jumped off the bed and ran to the window. Maria and Giselle ran into the field. It was four o’clock, and she had no rational reason to be out in the dark. “Are you kidding me?” He said. He and Bonnie stormed the girls, annoyed that they had put themselves in such danger. The parents could only hope their daughters weren’t hurt by what was out there.

Dark premonitions
Jack thought about how wolves hunted his daughters in the woods as he and Bonnie rushed into the field. Maybe it was wolves, coyotes or other predators that had destroyed his father’s farm when he was a boy. He kept telling himself, “Stop it.” This aspect of his personality, close to fears and superstitions, was new. The farmer was unsettled by the mere presence of the eggs, although he would never admit this out loud.
