Doubts about the old folk tales
When they found their mangled cattle that morning, Jack’s father had kept muttering to himself, “Stupid folk tales.” “It’s everything.” At the time, Jack hadn’t realized what his father had gotten himself into, but now he wondered. What was hiding out there? Was reality becoming more complicated at first glance? Were there really such beings? “Stop that!” he said to himself. The last thing he could do now was lose his mind. He would leave it to his girls to guess riddles.

The renewed noise
Jack’s daughters took on the responsibility of protecting the eggs. After Jack carefully covered the eggs with a tarp, he found that his daughters were obsessed with watching over them and had them beside them every waking hour. In order to help around the house, they literally had to pull their guard down, which upset Bonnie even more. Several days passed before Jack was again awakened in the night by the mournful, shrill sound he had heard the day of the eggs.
