The tarpaulin check
After Jack’s daughters had spread the tarpaulins, he checked them thoroughly. He made sure the weights were firmly in place. Why did Jack doubt that the plan would work? Perhaps he was afraid his wife would be disappointed. Maybe he thought it might hurt his daughters or destroy his farm. All these worries weighed heavily on his mind. Jack stayed outside and checked the tarpaulins inch by inch to make sure everything was as planned.

The fear of consequences
Jack was terrified of breaking the eggs. Even if it seemed absurd, he was afraid of the potential consequences. What if the person who laid those eggs came back and destroyed them? He trembled with that thought. As a farmer, he realized that his fears were unfounded. The animals had no vengeance – they couldn’t. Or could they? Jack didn’t even know what kind of creature he had here, though he was sure it wasn’t human.
