After that memorable supper, and while Amal was on her way to Cannes, the two exchanged email addresses and started talking via email. George was smitten, but this cavalier didn’t go all in on the romance right away. Things were so casual over email that Clooney wasn’t sure if they were just being friends or if there was something more going on. “I didn’t know if she wanted to go out with me — I just thought we were buddies,” he told David Letterman. It would be weeks before they saw each other again, and things were just getting started.

Clooney wasn’t sure if Amal felt the same way he did for her, partly because of their age difference. Looking back on the start of his love affair, George told The Hollywood Reporter, “I thought she was beautiful, funny, and obviously smart,” adding that Amal “probably thought I was old.” But after three months, it was evident that they were becoming more than just pals. So, when George made the audacious decision to invite Amal to join him in London in October of that year, they were about to receive a taste of what the remainder of their lives would be like.
