Serendipitous Meeting
Amal Alamuddin was going via Lake Como on her route to Cannes, France, in July 2013 with a mutual acquaintance of hers and Clooney’s. Clooney recalled the experience on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, saying, “‘I’m stopping by and can I bring my friend?” Clooney eagerly consented. George knew nothing else about this acquaintance, not even her name—but his agent made certain that the star didn’t miss out on what he knew would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Clooney’s agent intervened as he was ready for his dinner party with a premonition that would change everything. “I got a call from my agent who said, ‘I met this woman who is coming to your house, who you’re going to marry,'” Clooney explained to David Letterman. If the meal wasn’t important enough, Clooney’s parents were going to be there. “We just talked, and we stayed up all night talking,” he recalls. And, while there was obviously chemistry between George and Amal, it would take more than one meeting to solidify their relationship.
