George Clooney, like many other celebrities, did not always have it easy. His first major setback occurred in middle school, when he was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy, a medical ailment that paralyzes a portion of the face. It was gone within a year, but Clooney, ever the optimist, looks back on the experience and sees the wonderful effects of such a difficult early encounter. “It’s probably a good thing that it happened to me because it forced me to engage in a series of self-deprecation.” “And I think that’s a big part of being famous,” he told NPR.

College Life

Clooney excelled in high school, earning outstanding marks and participating in baseball and basketball. He even tried his hand at professional baseball with the Cincinnati Reds in 1977, but was released early. Clooney attended Northern Kentucky University and studied in broadcast journalism, knowing that a career in sports was not in his future. He temporarily attended the University of Cincinnati but did not graduate from either institution. Clooney made his acting debut in 1978 as an extra in the mini-series Centennial, which was being shot in his hometown. He had no idea this would be the first of many.
