At that moment, Scooter joyfully jumped into the shed and dropped the sticks right next to Pablo. Kenneth suddenly understood. “He wanted to help us,” he said in amazement. Lyla knelt down, tears of relief in her eyes. “Oh, Scooter,” she whispered in a fragile voice. The dog wagged his tail proudly. The sticks at her feet suddenly symbolized Scooter’s special way of looking after Pablo.

Kenneth hurriedly carried Pablo into the house, a mixture of relief and emotion overcoming him. “We’ll take you home,” he promised, holding him carefully. Lyla followed, her hand resting reassuringly on Scooter’s back. Inside, they laid Pablo on the couch and wrapped him in a blanket. “You’re safe now,” Lyla whispered, kissing his forehead. Kenneth reached for the phone, his voice quivering with relief. “We’ve found him. He’s safe,” he said as the search was finally over.
