Lyla couldn’t hold back her tears, she wrapped her arms tightly around Pablo. “Thank you, God,” she breathed with relief. Kenneth looked on and felt deep gratitude. He told the police that the search could be called off and described how it had happened. “Scooter led us to him,” he explained. The officers nodded in agreement. “We’re glad he’s okay,” said one. Together they gathered around Pablo as the end of their ordeal was finally at hand.

Given Scooter’s purposeful behavior, this explanation seemed plausible. “He’s really smart,” Lyla said, pulling the dog into her arms.
