Lyla’s anger at Scooter
Lyla couldn’t stand the sight of Scooter and was filled with anger and pain. “Take him away from here,” she demanded in a harsh voice. Kenneth looked at her, stunned. “Lyla, he’s just a dog,” he tried to reassure her. But she shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “He took Pablo away,” she sobbed, “I can’t bear to see him.” Kenneth sighed deeply, unable to find the right answer. The desperate situation was beginning to tear them both apart.

Lyla’s rage at Scooter
Scooter’s determination
Scooter seemed unusually determined and continued to hold the sticks firmly in his mouth. He paced restlessly around the yard and kept glancing at Kenneth and Lyla. “What’s wrong with him?” Kenneth mumbled in amazement. The dog’s behavior seemed puzzling, but despite the tension, Kenneth had the feeling that Scooter was trying to communicate something. “Maybe there’s more to it than that,” he mused as his gaze lingered on the sticks, which suddenly seemed to be more than just toys.
