Back at the house, Kenneth’s worries were compounded by the certainty that Pablo was not with Scooter. “What if something’s happened to him?” Lyla sobbed, her voice breaking. Kenneth pulled her close. “We’ll find him,” he said, though his confidence sounded weak. The police were still asking around, but to no avail. The silence of new leads was disheartening. Kenneth’s thoughts were racing, and every minute that passed made the situation seem more threatening. A breakthrough had to be made – and immediately.

Lyla despaired more and more at the lack of progress, and the fact that Scooter had been returned without Pablo only increased her anger. Sobbing, she slumped down on the porch steps and buried her face in her hands. “How could this have happened?” she cried in despair. Kenneth stood by, feeling powerless, while officers tried to find words of comfort, but to no avail. “We’re doing everything we can,” one of them said quietly. Kenneth nodded, but there was a leaden hopelessness in his chest.
