They’re Not Taken Aback
Marty was taken aback by his sons’ response. The news of their father’s death did not appear to shock them at all. The neighbor probably didn’t know why George was unconscious on the floor, but George and his son were pretty sure it had to do with George’s heart. It seemed like their dad had been having heart trouble for a while. At the time, the police probably took those statements at face value, but were the boys telling the truth?

Both had informed Marty that they were en route to the hospital and expected to arrive in the late afternoon or early evening. And that was supposed to be the last time we heard from Officer Marty. He couldn’t stop remembering the old man and his peculiar family situation, with an emphasis on “supposed to be” as in the days that followed. He began monitoring his condition in the hospital as well.
