For every person to have a baby is a beautiful honor. In marked contradiction, however, one feels disappointment and despair as they fall prey to fertility issues. While infertility is internationally acknowledged as a dilemma for individuals and couples, it is less widely known that trauma is affecting their families. Most families facing infertility grow closer and find ways to provide support, compassion, and understanding during deep loss and despair. This is a story about a couple who never imagined they would even be parents, but the unthinkable happened.

This Is The Story Of The First Septuplets In The World
Meet The Parents
Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey became mothers and fathers in 1996. They knew that their daughter was a miracle baby because Bobbi was born with a fertility-affected disease-a malfunctioning pituitary gland. The birth of Mikayla Marie greatly influenced them to try and get pregnant again.

Fertility Treatment
They agreed after the challenges the couple encountered when they decided to have Mikayla Marie, that it would be best to undergo fertility treatment. Metro was prescribed to help stimulate ovulation, which in turn helps a woman become pregnant. Everything started to look promising and both hoped a second child might be on the way.

Getting Help
One Isn’t Enough
This seemed like a regular check-up at the doctor’s for Bobbi, until the results from her scan returned. She didn’t have one embryo growing inside of her, nor did she have two or three. She was SEVEN! It was really breaking news, but it also posed a certain danger to Bobbi.

One Isn’t Enough
Selective Reduction
While fertility treatment can help a woman conceive naturally, it can also cause complications, as it is in McCaughey’s case. Doctors explained the possibility of such a pregnancy and took it a little further, indicating that a “selective reduction” should be considered. The cycle preserves the embryos that are most likely to survive and neglects those that may not.

Selective Reduction
Taking The Risk
While Bobbi and Kenny already had a child and knew the implications associated with continuing the pregnancy, they decided to just go for it. They decided to take the risk of losing any of their potential babies would be too hard for them.

Taking The Risk
Lots Of Attention
It was only when the McCaughey’s decided to forgo keeping all the babies in Bobbi’s tummy that their story began to circulate. The public and the media wanted to hear about the small family, the possibility of fertility treatment and their courageous decision to keep all seven babies. Though not all of the public accepted their decision, the pair believed that everything was going to work out well.

Lots Of Attention
Helping Hands
When news of their upcoming seven-child birth first emerged, several people and organizations flocked in to help the family. Kraft decided to donate a mac n’ cheese year’s worth, and others gave diapers and offered nanny services, as well as a 5,000 square foot house as well, believe it or not! The pair couldn’t believe that most of the people around them were so generous.

Another Gift
So when the couple thought all the donations had ended, they were shocked when they received a van! Then a few days later, they were informed that they would get a year of food stocks. They couldn’t believe how incredibly fortunate they were, and their babies weren’t even born yet .

Another Gift
Running On Nerves
The time before birth was very emotional, as you can imagine. No matter how excited Bobbi and Kenny were, their minds also had something to worry about what could go wrong. But it was still overwhelming and thrilling to count the days before the babies were born.

Running On Nerves
Early Birds
When they had to go to the hospital for the cesarean birth for 9 weeks early, on November 19, 1997, Bobbi and Kenny were surprised that seven babies were born from one another in six minutes. Their family has expanded to 10 people!

Meet The Babies
The next difficult thing was to name all the new babies, but this was not a task for which they weren’t preparing so names were given: Kenny (Kenneth) Robert, who was the heaviest child, Alexis May, Natalie Sue, and Kelsey Ann, who was the lightest baby, Nathan Roy, Brandon James, and Joel Steven, can you recall all of that? The babies were four boys and three girls.

Feeding Tubes
At first, two of the babies had to eat through the tube. Natalie had unbearable pain whenever she ate and had bad acid reflux. Lexi had something else – a body condition that made it very difficult for her to eat.

The Birthing Staff
It wasn’t easy to deliver all the babies. It was also a first for each of the many personnel who went to the hospital to help out. They were making American history. Two days after the babies came into the world, everyone who helped worked together to take a picture that day.

Camping Out
Early in the workforce, Bobbi met up with news reporters waiting to cover her story. Their first coverage of the septuplets was at the Iowa Methodist Hospital Center in Des Moines. Sad to say, it would take them a bit longer to get the full story than they thought.

Camping Out
Leaving The Hospital
The day was full of smiles and tears when Bobbi and Kenny packed their children in the car to get home. Cameras and reporters flocked to them as they got out of the hospital. They all wanted to see their babies. It took them three months and ten days to just get home safe.

Extra Safe
Security measures had to be taken to guarantee the safety of the babies before returning them to the family and arriving at home. The police have created posts outside their home to make sure they can quickly enter their residence. But it wouldn’t be long before they moved to their new place.

Extra Safe
Getting The House
After it was all over, a ceremony took place to accommodate the existing new family of 10 to get their new 5500 ft² (511 m²) house. The founder of Clarke Companies, Lloyd Clarke, handed Kenny in the garage of the house with the keys to their new home. Just about everyone felt Their happiness.

Magazine Publicity
Bobbi and Kenny initially thought that only the reporters wanted to get to know them and their background as well as listen to their experiences, but then the story rapidly expanded. Time Magazine’s article was published in December 1997.

ABC News
The first ABC media outlet to feature and interview the family was ABC News Prime Time. And although the birth of the twins had a lot of coverage, most of them were just journalists who wrote their own version of what other reporters had written.

Roses Come With Thorns
Even though many major news outlets wanted to cover their experiences, a lot of critical comments were still received. Some accused the pair of having “too many babies” and told them they could “hurt the environment.” But none of the negative comments could erase the euphoria they experienced.

Taking A Break
The McCaughey’s decided to remain as private as possible after the media frenzy calmed the family. Each year, for their kid’s birthdays, it was the only day they would make a public appearance. Dionne Quintuplets, who warned them against overexposure to the media, helped them to make their final decision.

Taking A Break
The Quintuplets
The quintuplets of Dionne were born in 1934 to Elzire Dionne in Ontario, Canada. They were brought up in an unpleasant environment and they were used as a ‘circus-like’ attraction for tourists. They were quick to warn the parents of the Septuplets of the psychological damage caused by too much exposure.

Load After Load
This didn’t mean they had time for themselves to be out of the general public’s eyes. There was a ton to do with so many new children in the house… washing uploads of clothes. The couple had about seventeen laundry loads each week on average. Not only that, but two, from washing machines to dryers, had to be acquired.

Babies In Bulk
The babies were burning through (or pooping, rather) in a single day…around 52 diapers! But that’s not all. They also used to consume approximately 42 bottles every day! This was sure to be a hefty investment, so the McCaughey’s began to realize they needed a long-term strategy.
