Margaret’s Confidence
Margaret entered with a confident demeanor, evidently expecting a favorable conclusion. Her manner spoke it all—as if she’d already won whatever argument hadn’t even begun. She took her seat and casually mentioned that she was certain that things will be resolved soon. Tom exchanged a knowing look with me, sensing that she could try to turn the dinner into a conversation about allowances.

The meal proceeded smoothly until it didn’t. Margaret cleared her throat and glanced around the table. “Speaking of future plans,” she said, keeping her tone nice but purposeful. “Has anything been decided about that monthly arrangement?” The room became quieter, and the unsaid tension became obvious. I took a time to consider my response, as Tom shuffled in his seat. Nobody was surprised when the topic finally came up.
