Neck rings, another term for neck coils, are pieces of jewelry with a hard structure that are worn by people on their necks usually to elongate such body parts and to look more attractive. Are you familiar with the story of a woman who wore neck rings and managed to keep them on her neck for some years? If not, make sure to keep reading. Why did she do that? What happened to her neck? Did it really work? Was she satisfied with the results tons of neck coils gave her?
Why They Use It
There are people in this world who study different elements of human development from the past until the present time – they are called anthropologists. Studying neck rings, they formulated speculation that a certain tribe uses neck rings and coil them all-around women’s necks to make them less alluring and captivating – their solution to lessen the act of slavery in their tribe. This theory is already reasonable enough, yet there is another speculation that totally opposes this idea.

Why They Use It
For Beauty
Even though it is more usual for women to wear, these neck rings could also be used by men. The other theory explains that a person resorts to coiling rings around his or her neck for it to be extended and elongated. People use it in order to be more appealing and attractive to others. But do not be fooled by the most common misconception about neck rings: they don’t literally stretch the neck. Neck rings actually work by shoving a person’s collarbone down – that is the reason why the neck seems to appear longer.

For Beauty
Beliefs
Neck coils have always been a special part of certain tribes. They think that someone becomes more captivating and alluring when he or she has a longer neck. This proved the idea that tribes are fond of engaging in activities that would help them enhance any of their body structure in order for them to look more attractive.

Beliefs
The Dangers And Risks
We are quite sure there is a question floating in your mind right now – “Isn’t it dangerous for people to try?”. Well, the fact that neck rings just push the collarbone down shows no serious danger at all. All they need is the courage and endurance to carry those neck rings coiled up their necks wherever they go.

The Dangers And Risks
Cultural
But when you are actually in the situation and have already worn the rings for a long time, you would feel the difficulty and pain from time to time. To be honest, that may lead to a serious injury in the long run, but the people in the tribe shrugged that thought off their minds because what’s more important to them is making themselves more beautiful and attractive.

Lifelong Goal
The story started with a woman named Sydney V. Smith. At the age of 28, she shared how much she wanted to be a “giraffe woman ever since she was little. She also shared that three years ago marks the moment where she did one of the craziest things she had done in her entire life – wearing over 11 neck rings just to achieve her dream to elongate her neck.

Lifelong Goal
The Motivation
As a kid, Sydney was gifted with a neck longer than the others. Students in middle school even created a nickname for her and that was “giraffe girl”, but she was not offended at all – in fact, she was proud. One day, she was watching National Geographic and she found out about some tribes in Burma and Thailand who engage in various body modifications, especially neck rings in order to elongate their necks to become more attractive. Ever since she became a fan of body enhancements done by such tribes.

The Motivation
Experimenting
You could say that Sydney was a tough and adventurous person because after viewing some photographs of tribes in Burma and Thailand who used neck rings and successfully had longer necks, she rushed down to their laundry place and got herself a few ductile hangers and coiled them up around her neck. Despite the lack of support from her parents who just found everything she was doing silly, she maintained the hanger rings and managed to wear them every night.

Experimenting
Attachment
Ever since she became a teenager, it was evident to Sydney and other people surrounding her that she was gifted with a much longer neck than usual. She did not take it as a negative indifference and even looked at it as a unique and beautiful aspect. She wanted to make her neck even longer because for her, that was what would make her more attractive. That moment when she was already engaging herself in using rings out of clothes hangers, she felt joy and devotion to those hangers.

Attachment
Slow And Steady
Sydney made a risky decision to push through the process all by herself, without any guidance from an expert. Another thing that made the process more difficult for her was that she was already in her 20s when she did it – meaning, her bones were already fully grown and would not make any adjustments easily anymore.

Slow And Steady
The Beginning
At first, she was able to manage and enjoy the pressure those rings were giving her neck and collarbone. To distract herself from such severe pressure, she looked for something that would give her some joy which led her to wear a necklace made from copper that had a tight fit. All of these happened in the year 2011.

The Beginning
Adjusting To The Rings
She knew that she would experience an extra challenge because she was already in her 20s at that time. Her body was already mature – her bones would not be able to easily adjust to what she was trying to do. She remained positive and determined. She decided to be patient and take everything slowly. After a few weeks passed, she managed to coil 10 rings around her neck.

Adjusting To The Rings
Shy Girl
Despite the happiness, she was feeling using the rings to achieve her giraffe woman’s dreams, she was feeling a bit of shyness whenever she went out in a public place. That was why she got used to wearing turtle neck designed clothes to cover up the rings around her neck. That also affected her way of living – she decided to take a job with almost no exposure to a crowd which led her to work in the kitchen setting of a restaurant.

Shy Girl
The Mastermind
Eventually, she got rid of the neck rings made of hangers for clothes. She was lucky to have a very supportive friend who made her new fabulous neck rings. Her friend even customized each ring with a special lock to make Sydney able to remove it when necessary. This friend deserves an award, imagine the time and effort she spent just to make those rings. Mad respect.

The Mastermind
The Risks
Sydney shared the difficulty she experienced through the process of wearing the customized neck rings for the first time. She said that she got a few burns because they were newly forged, but she managed to bear with the pain. Nonetheless, she was happy because as of that time, her neck was already measuring around 10 or 11 inches long.

The Risks
A Worldwide Sensation
Who doesn’t know the TV show “Ripley’s Believe It or Not”? If you are fond of hearing the strangest, funniest, and craziest stories existing in today’s world, you would be a big fan of the show. One of the biggest turning points in Sydney’s life was her story, about wearing neck rings to achieve her dreams of becoming a “giraffe woman”, being featured in “Ripley’s Believe It or Not”.

A Worldwide Sensation
In The Media
The directors, producers, and everyone behind the show were fascinated by the brave step Sydney had made just to elongate her neck. As the story was aired on American television, many people were curious and enchanted about Sydney’s story. After a while, her name was talked about in different places in her hometown. Slowly, she became famous for her neck rings story.

In The Media
A Comic Book Character
Not only did she suddenly become a star, she even turned into a comic book character. A comic expert was fascinated after hearing Sydney’s one of a kind story that was why she got featured in one of his or her comic books. That was another aspect that boosted her fame and caused her story to spread and reach farther places.

A Comic Book Character
Making Progress
The comic expert featured her by putting a picture of her in the comic book and putting the caption “Progress” under the photo. If you would analyze why he or she wrote “Progress”, it would be because of Sydney’s determination and patience in making her neck longer. She started with baby steps and took every step slowly. It seemed like her hard work was paying off because a change in her neck length was already visible at that time.

Making Progress
Too Heavy
Sydney increased the number of rings wrapped around her neck from time to time. When she reached 15 neck rings, weighing a total of five pounds, she could not endure the pressure and weight anymore. That was why removing those neck rings came to her mind. What do you think was the best decision for her at that time? Should she take off the rings or not?

Too Heavy
Not Worth It
Imagine carrying four footballs all at once, they amount to five pounds. That was what Sydney was feeling, but not with her hands, she was feeling that weight on her neck and collarbone. She already felt it difficult to finish a day wearing 15 rings while doing her work and finishing some errands.

Not Worth It
Medical Issues
As Sydney’s story reached different social media platforms, it became controversial – was it really safe? Thankfully, an orthopedic surgeon named Dr. Jonathan Nissanoff spoke up about the issue. He bluntly warned the netizens and said that coiling rings around the neck was not advisable at all. He also pointed out the fact that Sydney was already in her 20s. Her bones were already matured and would not make any adjustments easily anymore.

Medical Issues
Not Giving Up
Unfortunately, Sydney disregarded everything the medical expert said and even increased the number of rings she was wearing to 12. She also made a bold decision to build a career in the modeling industry because of her unique style, but she said that she would not want to be overworked in any way.

Not Giving Up
Health First
Well, she immediately regretted that decision of hers ignoring the advice of medical experts. After some time, she was not able to endure the pressure and pain brought by the neck rings anymore and had come to a decision to permanently remove them already.

Health First
They Dominated Her Life
Sydney participated in tons of interviews after the media had discovered that she already took the rings off her neck. Everyone was curious as to why she removed them. She explained and cleared everything in her latest interview. She said that she could not take the pressure the neck rings were giving her anymore and as a normal person, she found it very difficult to finish her tasks each day.

They Dominated Her Life
Her Life Changed
Well, Sydney must have been shaken into reality and realized that wearing those rings around her neck was really a bad idea. We could not totally blame her – everyone living in this world most probably had done crazy things too just to reach their own standards and achieve their life-long dreams. At the end of the day, people should know the most important thing out of doing those crazy things – learning from the mistakes.

Her Life Changed
All About The Rings
After Sydney’s decision to remove those rings off her neck, the media, her followers, and other people who knew her story had a chance to take a closer look at the rings. Even after five years, people did not stop asking her thousands of questions just about the rings. Eventually, she admitted that she was tired of all the questions and felt kind of lonely.

All About The Rings
Where Did Sydney Go
She felt that all of the people who knew her story were trying their very best just to interact with her just to have a scoop of knowledge about the rings that used to be coiled up around her neck. She realized that no one actually cared about her – her health, condition, and feelings. She felt very isolated whenever she was surrounded by people. It was a tough time for Sydney.

Where Did Sydney Go
Freedom At Last
It took her five years of pain and pressure before realizing that she had to let all of the rings go permanently. Maybe, it was because of her solid determination in achieving her life-long dream of being the “giraffe woman” that was why she ignored all the negative effects the rings made her experience. Well, what’s important now is that she is no longer suffering.

Freedom At Last
Not Practical
In one of her interviews, she said that people could try coil rings around their necks if they would want. She just gave a few conditions to consider before pushing through the process. First, if they would want to feel lonely; second, if they already had plenty of money, enough to sacrifice work; lastly, if they would never need to leave their house again. If they would fit in all conditions, then go!

Not Practical
Still The Giraffe Woman
Sydney was not ashamed of anything she had done in her past. In fact, she gave her past self credit in what she had become even if her body experienced some changes. Despite putting an end to her routine of wearing neck rings, she still called herself the “giraffe woman”. Besides, she still had that long neck, after all.

Still The Giraffe Woman
It Took A Toll
After carrying all of those rings around her neck, that weighed for about a total of four pounds, for five years, she was surely guided by a guardian angel because she was not diagnosed with any serious condition. The only thing she got was bruises. Lucky for her!

It Took A Toll
In A Lot Of Pain
After doing crazy things to your body, expect that you would suffer from some consequences, too. That was what Sydney experienced after taking all of the rings off her neck. She had a taste of her own medicine – she said that her neck, at that time, was at its weakest point. She could barely feel anything in that certain part.

In A Lot Of Pain
Trying To Recover
Sydney must have felt extreme joy when her doctors said that she had been experiencing a fast recovery – even quicker than what the medical experts expected. Though the bruises were still evident and she could barely move her head because of her neck’s stiffness, at least she was not diagnosed with any serious disease.

Trying To Recover
