Poveglia Island, located in the Venetian Lagoon, has been considered one of the most haunted places in the world. The small island has a horrible past, having served as a quarantine station during the bubonic plague in the 18th century and as a psychiatric institution in the twentieth. The island’s ruthless treatment of the sick and mentally ill is supposed to have left a legacy of paranormal activity, with numerous sightings of ghosts and other strange phenomena reported over the years.
