Who wouldn’t be fascinated about the draining and cleaning process? Onlookers gathered along the canal as employees continued their job, watching the whole affair unfold slowly. Maybe Parisians wanted to see if they could discover a long-lost item in the mix. Perhaps they were simply searching for a pleasant type of entertainment that involved spending time outside? We know we’d love to see anything like this.

Although this operation is done very frequently, given the age of the canal, vintage things such as this camera can still be unearthed during the cleaning. It’s perplexing to consider how these goods came up to the bottom of the canal in the first place, especially considering they’re older than the last time the canal was cleaned. People may dump objects in the channel on purpose, or unintentionally, we don’t know. There are often artifacts discovered that are older than expected.
