Few signs found
The animal control officers, trained to deal with such situations, searched carefully for clues as to the route the two might have taken. They looked for footprints, broken branches or other signs, but there was little to be found. “There’s nothing here,” one of the men finally said in frustration. Kenneth felt a sinking feeling in his stomach. The minutes passed inexorably and there was still no sign of Pablo and Scooter. The uncertainty weighed heavily on him.

Shortly afterwards, police cars rolled into the street, while Lyla’s car also pulled up outside the house. Lights were flashing everywhere, and the neighborhood was now in a complete state of emergency. Lyla jumped out of the car, her face lined with fear. “Kenneth, what’s happened?” she gasped. He hastily explained: “Pablo and Scooter have disappeared. They used a hole in the fence.” The police immediately took over the coordination of the search, which made the urgency of the situation even clearer.
