He had not much luck
Richard would not lose up and he asked the other two girls to be his date on the night of the prom; nevertheless, he did not have much success with either of them or with others. The rejections were much more pleasant this time around, but they still caused him the same amount of pain as the first one. He had the impression that no one loved him, and he was certain that everyone would make fun of him if he went to prom by himself.

What Samantha told him
Richard considered Samantha as his second choice because she was a well-liked young lady who had a large number of acquaintances. She was courteous enough to inform him that she had already managed to secure a date for the prom. On the other hand, Richard was well aware that this was not the truth and that it was merely an excuse for him to turn down the invitation. For the sake of just accepting the rejection, he was unable to say anything else.
