Before entering college, Selleck already received a basketball scholarship at the University of Southern California. Still, around this time, he had a side gig as a model to pay the bills. Now, when he was pursuing a degree in Business Administration, his drama coach urged him to try acting. It was right to follow the advice given by his drama coach. He began to study at the Beverly Hills Playhouse with the brilliant Milton Katselas.

Selleck previously said, “I am a veteran; I’m proud of it. I was a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry, National Guard, Vietnam era. We’re all brothers and sisters in that sense.” He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1973.
