Let nature take its course
Despite the temptation to rush from egg to egg and help the birds hatch, Jack had a better understanding. He knew nature had to take its course. Some birds didn’t hatch, which was sad, but that was the way it was. When he saw the baby in front of him, his heart nestled. He still fretted about his cornfield and his chickens, but he had no choice but to commit himself to the survival of this little creature.

Jack thought, “Come on, kiddo.” He watched as the baby bird struggled out of the egg. “Give it your all.” Farmers didn’t usually have a special bond with animals. Despite occasionally petting and treating his animals well, Jack usually refrained from getting too emotional. At least he used to. Now he watched breathlessly to see if the baby could spring from the egg into its new life.
