The sound of the TV
Finally, she heard the TV reverberating around the house. It was going just as she had hoped, which gave her some confidence. She knelt and slowly opened the hatch a little more. She opened it just enough to see if the coast was clear down the corridor.

When Lily was certain that the coast was clear, she gradually lowered the staircase until it was ready for her to descend. Lily knew the stairs would groan the instant she stepped on it, so she had to move quickly but carefully. She drew herself up by the stairwell’s sidewalls to reduce her weight on the steps.
