With roles in Die Hard, Galaxy Quest, and Sense and Sensibility, Alan Rickman had established a solid reputation. In Harry Potter, he rose to the top of his game for his portrayal of Severus Snape, an overbearing potions professor. Snape sacrificed his life for Harry in the eighth film of the series, making the entire audience cry. Rickman passed away in January 2016 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Richard Griffiths is best known for his roles in Gandhi, Sleepy Hollow, and other films, but he was well-known long before the Harry Potter franchise because of his notable performances in Gandhi, Sleepy Hollow, and other films. While filming Harry Potter, he also made notable appearances in films such as Lost in Love and Bedtime Stories. Following Harry Potter, Griffiths joined another major franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean. Griffiths died in 2013 as a result of cardiac surgery complications. His final appearance was in the film named, About Time.
