Johnson was a member of the University of Miami football team that won the national title in 1991. He aspired to be a professional football player, but he was passed over in the 1995 NFL Draft. He signed with the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) Calgary Stampeders, but was released after his first season. Johnson’s father Rocky and maternal grandpa Peter Maivia both worked as professional wrestlers, and he signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 1996. After adopting the gimmick of a charismatic trash-talker, he came to stardom and helped usher in the Attitude Era, a period of industry development in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
