Workers proceeded to remove the water from the Canal Saint-Martin until barely 20 inches remained. First and foremost, they had to bring the fish to safety. The cleanup crew spent three days in the water catching carp, trout, and bream. They collected the animals and moved them to a different stretch of the river.

Even though witnessing all of the rubbish in the canal was disappointing, there is yet hope. The finds drew attention to the city’s garbage problem. The chance was taken advantage of by authorities to discuss the situation. “If everyone pitches in and avoids dumping anything into the water,” Celia Blauel told MailOnline, “we might be able to swim in the canal in a few years.” She is the deputy mayor.
