Coat Of Many Colors
Temperatures in the Smoky Mountains can easily drop below 20 degrees during a regular winter. Staying warm in the winter was no simple chore for the Parton family, who had straw beds and rags for jackets. One of her mother’s bright coats, on the other hand, would inspire her to create one of her favorite songs. “Coat of Many Colors” is more than a song; it’s a love letter to Dolly Parton’s family and childhood.
Singing Debut
Parton got her first guitar from her uncle Bill when she was ten years old. She began composing her own lyrics and making music shortly after that. Parton began singing on her local Knoxville radio station not long after.
