On October 5, 1923, Avie Lee Owens was born in a small South Carolina village. Her mother and preacher father used to sing praises to God as she grew up. Owens was from a musical family, much like her famous daughter Dolly Parton. Her father penned his own songs and played the fiddle. Kitty Wells, an American country singer, would record one of them, “Singing His Praise.” Owens married the love of her life, Robert Lee Parton, in 1939, when she was only 15 years old.
