Children Are Given Faceless Dolls
Young Amish children are sometimes given faceless dolls as a toy. Pride and vanity are discouraged by the expressionless, blank faces. According to a 2007 sociological study, the dolls are faceless since “all are alike in God’s view,” and the absence of facial features complies with the Bible’s prohibition against graven photos. The majority of Amish doll makers remained anonymous.
