Nadia Comăneci
Retired gymnast Nadia Comăneci won five Olympic gold medals, all in individual events. When she was only 14 years old, she became the first gymnast to have ever gotten a perfect score at the Olympic Games. She is credited with making the sport popular around the world. After she retired in 1984, she was unfortunately restricted from leaving her home country, Romania. In November 1989, she defected with some Romanians.

The group traveled several nights until they reached Austria. They were then taken to the U.S. Nadia Comăneci has lived in the country since 1989. She married Bart Conner, an American Olympic gold medal gymnast. Their son, Dylan, was born in 2006. She became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 2001, though she maintains her Romanian citizenship. These days, Comăneci is still pretty much involved with gymnastics and the Olympic Games.
