In the midst of the chaos, Kenneth and Lyla found a moment to talk. “I swear I checked on him,” Kenneth pointed out wearily. “He was asleep, Lyla.” She shook her head, full of unease. “How could you not realize the door was open?” she asked sharply. “I don’t know,” Kenneth replied irritably. “But we have to find out what happened. Placing blame won’t bring Pablo back.” Lyla breathed heavily, but she realized that he was right.

Kenneth repeated his assertion emphatically. “I’m telling you, I closed the door,” he declared sternly. Lyla crossed her arms, doubt reflected on her face. “Then how could he go out?” she asked reproachfully. “I don’t know, but I wouldn’t lie,” Kenneth replied, noticeably tense. “There must be another explanation.” Lyla’s gaze softened, but the concern remained. “We have to find out how,” she finally said quietly.
