Trying to focus
Dwayne approached the guard slowly but steadily. He lost all of his previous confidence, and when he got close enough, he heard the muttering once more, but the applause and jeers from those behind him made it impossible for him to understand. Dwayne tried to concentrate by closing his eyes.

The mumbles gradually became words as he inhaled deeply. The guard again repeated a few sentences made up of the words. It took Dwayne a while to grasp the message, despite his attention to the words and sentences. However, he staggered back a few steps when he did.
