Searching My Room

I locked my door behind me and flicked on the small flashlight, my nerves buzzing as I began searching every corner of my room. I started with my desk, pulling out the bottom drawer and running my fingers along the rails, hoping to feel something hidden. When that came up empty, I checked under the bed, rifled through old shoe boxes, and even removed the vent cover to shine the light inside, finding nothing but dust. Standing on a chair, I pushed against the closet shelf and felt it shift slightly. Reaching behind it, my fingers brushed against something cool and taped in place.

Box Of Unopened Letters

Carefully lifting the loose board, I discovered a small box taped to the back wall of the closet. I eased it free and placed it on my bed, my heart pounding as I struggled to open the stuck lid. Inside was a neatly stacked bundle of letters, every single one still sealed and addressed to me. The stamps varied, but the handwriting was identical, deliberate, and careful. There was no return name on any envelope. I counted twelve letters in total before returning them to the box, pausing to listen for any movement outside my door.
